Florida v. Tomasz Roman Kosowski

The Tomasz Kosowski case centers on the March 2023 disappearance and presumed murder of attorney Steven Cozzi in Largo, Florida. Kosowski, a plastic surgeon, had been involved in a contentious civil lawsuit against his former medical practice, and Cozzi represented defendants in that litigation. Cozzi disappeared from his law office on March 21, 2023, and his body has never been found.

Prosecutors allege Kosowski planned and carried out Cozzi’s murder, relying on surveillance footage, DNA evidence and other circumstantial and forensic evidence to reconstruct what they believe happened. Kosowski was arrested days after the disappearance and charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

In an unusual turn, Kosowski waived his right to a jury trial for both the guilt and penalty phases and elected to represent himself, with standby and special counsel available. His case is therefore being tried before Judge Joseph Bulone, who will determine whether prosecutors have proven Kosowski guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
